canonical elsewhere

critical info canonical-elsewhere Indexing and reachability

The page hands its accumulated weight to a different URL and drops out of the index itself. On a generated site this is nearly always one wrong line in the template, repeated across every page it produced.

What indexgap reports

The finding reads:

critical canonical-elsewhere a copy of …: the canonical points there, and that page is open in the build — as it should be if this is a variant (a print version, a second address)

How to fix it

Check the template: the canonical must point at the page itself. Right now it hands its weight to another page and drops out of the index.

How it behaves at scale

Collapsed when it fires template-wide. If it appears on 90% or more of the pages — or of one language version — of a site with at least 20 pages, it is a property of the template and is reported once, with the count, instead of once per page.

Finding it

pipx install indexgap
cd your-project
indexgap init
indexgap check

Then indexgap brief turns every finding on this page into a work order in indexgap-briefs/, with the thresholds the result has to satisfy and the command to check it.
