No robots.txt is not an error, but it is an absence of control: crawl rate, sitemap discovery and AI-crawler policy all default to whatever each engine prefers. Nothing breaks without robots.txt, which is exactly why it stays missing. What is lost is the ability to say anything at all: crawl rate, the sitemap location, and whether the crawlers behind AI answers are welcome are all decided for you, engine by engine, with no record of the decision anywhere in your repository.
The finding reads:
info no-robots robots.txt was not found — not an error, but not a check either: pass its path with --robots to have it checked
Create a robots.txt: without one you can neither close anything off nor point at a sitemap.
This is a site-level finding: it belongs to the site, not to any one page, and is reported once however many pages are audited.
